Roderveld Raku 135 Litre Wood Fired Pyramid Kiln

Roderveld Raku 135 Litre Wood Fired Pyramid Kiln

SKU: RDVK16

The Roderveld Pyramid Raku Kiln range excels because of its simplicity, efficiency, and its enormous prospects for experimenting. Our Roderveld pyramid kiln can be fired with wood or propane gas, in reduction or oxidising, for RAKU, biscuit or full glaze firing, either fully loaded or for a quick firing with just one pot.

Its distinctive design features two handles on the outside of the frame, so moving the kiln is stress-free. The 135 Litre Top weighs just 45kg, the roderveld kiln top can swap between a wood firing base and a gas firing hearth! Because of its unique shape, the heat in the kiln is deflected downwards before leaving the firing chamber via the flue. This results in an amazingly fast temperature increase while using little energy.

Firing Information:

The first time the kiln is fired, it will take about 75 minutes, and subsequent firings 60 minutes to reach 1050 c in temperature on average when propane is the fuel source. Firing the kiln with wood is even faster! After firing the kiln with dry wood for about one hour, it is then possible to reach the required temperature and unload every 30 minutes with a minimal amount of wood compared to traditional, large capacity wood kiln builds.

The exclusive sloping door design means that it always locks the kiln tight, due to the weight distribution in the design, but it can still be opened quickly and easily, or just open a crack to check on the melting of the glaze, which is extremely useful for RAKU firing. Moreover, because this kiln's door is on the side instead of at the top there is less risk of burnt eyelashes and eyebrows and thus much safer for the novice and experienced potter. Operating the wood fired kiln provides full involvement with the firing process that is not possible with electric kiln firing. Linking the potter closer to the firing process.

Opening the door and looking into the kiln to see if the glazes are already fusing and experiencing how beautiful the transparent orange glow given to work during this firing range of 1000°C and above this. It seems that the kiln is firing itself due to its efficiency. Everybody develops their own methods and firing styles about the fire build-up over a period of time with our roderveld pyramid kilns and assorted styles for wood firing and the varied approaches to reduction, so that using the kiln becomes a very personal experience between the potter, and the kiln.
