Spectrum's Hot Running Chowder Stoneware Brush-On Glaze has been gaining significant popularity, inspiring potters to experiment with glaze effects that mimic pools of water. Due to its high demand and occasional supply shortages, we have been conducting trials here at Potterycrafts to find alternative glazes that achieve a similar effect while we wait for Hot Running Chowder to restock.
Here is how you can replicate the effect using alternative products:
Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Base Glaze Layer:
Apply 3 coats of Amaco Celadon Obsidian Brush-on Glaze to your bisque fired pot. Allow the glaze to dry completely between coats.
2. Second Glaze Layer:
Apply 2 coats of Amaco Potter's Choice Iron Lustre Brush-On Glaze. Again, let the glaze dry between coats.
3. Top Glaze Layer (Key to the Effect)
Apply 1-2 coats of Botz Plus 9020 Brilliant Effect Glaze. This glaze mimics the effect traditionally created by Spectrum Hot Chowder Gloss Brush-on Glaze.
Be strategic about the placement of the Botz glaze to get the desired effect. Apply it where you want the fluid, pooling look to occur.
There is also a video of the process on our Instagram follow along for more inspiration!
Alternative Trial Combinations:
We also tested several variations by replacing the second glaze layer and achieved unique results.

Spectrum Texture Autumn Brush-on Glaze for the second glaze layer.

Our Potterycrafts Chun range includes a variety of colours and can be layered with other glazes to produce fluid, reactive finishes. The Chun glazes offer endless possibilities for creative experimentation.
Customer Tip:
Some of our customers have successfully used Amaco Potter's Choice Honey Flux Brush-On Glaze as an effective alternative to Hot Running Chowder. It is worth trying out!
Important Reminder:
Always conduct glaze tests before applying any new combination to your favourite pieces! Testing is a fun and valuable way to discover new effects and techniques. We hope this guide helps, and if you have any further questions, do not hesitate to reach out. Happy glazing!
