Sculpt Nouveau Traditional Liver of Sulfur Patina
Liver of Sulfur is the classic darkening patina for bronze, brass, and copper. Depending on the surface, the strength of the solution, and the application method, it will produce a golden brown to a burgundy, black patina. It is most commonly used as a base patina to increase contrast between light and dark areas. Liver of Sulfur may be used hot or cold and must be water rinsed to stop the reaction. To create the patina, combine 1 tsp. with 1 pint of distilled water. The solution will deteriorate rapidly so it is recommended to only mix enough for a day or so. Unused chunks should be sealed and stored in a cool, dry, and dark location.
The product comes in a small container of tablets, these need to be ground into a powder and mixed with distilled water. Combine 1 teaspoon with 1 pint of distilled water.
Store in a cool dry area.
Cold Technique: Using a brush, spray bottle, or sponge, evenly cover the surface of the metal. Let the patina sit for 5 minutes, then wash the metal in cold water to neutralize the patina. This patina must be neutralized. You may wish to use steel wool or an abrasive pad to highlight the sculpture. Liver of Sulfur applied cold will be brown. For a darker colour, sparingly apply more Liver of Sulfur. If you want black, apply hot.
Hot Technique: Heat the metal with a torch until it is between180°F-220°F. (82-104°C). Then apply the Liver of Sulfur solution sparingly with a brush, using circular or stippling motions, while working across the surface, until the desired colour is established. This will be a black patina and will turn dark very fast when the metal is hot. You may need to burnish the surface with steel wool or Scotch-Brite to even out the patina.
