Earthenware Clay

Earthenware Clay

Earthenware is traditionally made from ‘red earthenware’ clay or ‘red terra-cotta.’  However, some earthenware clays are buff, grey, or white. Earthenware clay is a type of pottery that is characterized by its colour and porous texture. It is one of the oldest and most common forms of ceramics, used for a wide range of purposes, from practical everyday items to decorative pieces.

Our Earthenware clays come in a range of colours including buff, brown, white, and grey. However, the most well-known earthenware clay is terracotta clay, which is typically a rich rusty red colour. Red earthenware clay gets its distinctive colour because it has a high iron oxide content. To make earthenware clay waterproof and therefore suitable for dinnerware, it needs to be glaze fired.

Earthenware clay is a product of the earth, and it is collected from the ground and then processed. Earthenware clay has a reputation for being quite plastic. A‘ plastic’ clay is quite soft and workable, meaning it is easy to shape. Our earthenware clays are available in prepared plastic form or powdered. Earthenware clays are low temperature clays between 1040°C
– 1160°C. Earthenware casting slips or pottery slips are a liquid form of clay used in mould making. Made by deflocculating plastic clay.
